Background
Our client is a prominent provider of powder mixing services to the livestock feed industry. They procure raw materials from a range of sources worldwide, and then blend them to their customers’ specifications. The ingredients typically come as a powder, however, some minerals and vitamins are used in liquid and oil form. Recent company growth saw a need for our client to broaden their mixing capabilities and increase productivity.
Challenge
With the existing plant aging, and already at capacity, the decision was made to commission an entirely new plant. This would allow for the best features of the existing plant to be replicated while simultaneously incorporating new ideas and modern technology. The new plant would be engineered to the latest standards for hygiene and safety, along with structural considerations and commercial efficiency. The new system would need to meet the increase in daily throughput and satisfy new requirements for oil injection into the mixing process.
Solution
Four 2000kg rotating powder mixers, pre and post processing equipment and supporting structure were designed and built for this project. Custom automatic sealing systems were designed for top and bottom of the mixers for filling and emptying along with pneumatically operated oil injection valves to allow for on-demand oil addition. The overhead gantry crane was designed and built to accommodate bulk bags while a manual bag dump was included for raw material handling. The system includes a sifting assembly per pair of mixers. Other features include a pot filling auger, dust extraction and a pack-head rail system to service multiple lines. Each mixing line is controlled via its own operating panel with custom recipes for various product.
